Recent legislation, particularly Government Regulation No. 41 of 1996 (GR 41/96), has modified the ability of resident foreigners to own homes in Indonesia. GR 41/94 builds on a slightly earlier Government Regulation – No. 40 of 1996 (GR 40/1996) – as well as the new Mortgage Law (Law No. 4 of 1996), so that all three need to be read together to obtain a full picture.
